WHAT WE DO

WHAT IS A COMMUNITY COUNCIL?

Community councils are made up of local people who care about where they live and want to make a real, positive difference in their neighbourhoods. They’re all about giving communities a voice—making sure the views, concerns, and ideas of local residents are heard and taken seriously by councils and other public bodies. While they’re not part of the local government, they work closely with it to represent the area’s best interests and to help shape the decisions that affect daily life.

Being part of a community council means getting involved in a wide range of local matters—from planning and development to local services, roads, parks, and community safety. But it’s not all about meetings and paperwork. Community councils also help organise events, run campaigns, support local groups, publish newsletters, and even take on projects that improve life for everyone—whether that’s helping the elderly, supporting young people, or creating spaces where the whole community can come together.

Most importantly, community councils bring people together. They give neighbours the chance to connect, share ideas, and work side by side to make their area the best it can be. You don’t need any special experience—just a bit of time, a sense of pride in your community, and a willingness to get involved. If you want to stay informed, make your voice count, and help bring about real change where you live, joining your community council is a great place to start.
